Principal’s bail plea rejected, protests on

Students protest outside Rabindra Sadan Girls’ College

Hailakandi, Sept. 8: The bail plea of a Karimganj college principal, who was arrested yesterday for misbehaviour and sending obscene messages to students, was rejected by the district and sessions judge court today.

The court also directed a deputy superintendent of police-level inquiry against Ashok Kumar Das, principal of Rabindra Sadan Girls’ College, under the provisions of IT Act regarding exchange of messages with students.

Earlier, the officer-in-charge of Karimganj Sadar police station, Subal Talukdar, informed the court that the students had started a movement against the principal and the situation might turn worse if he was granted bail.

The principal was arrested yesterday after he pushed students who had gone to his chamber to discuss nominations for the college council election and the students filed an FIR, also alleging that he sends indecent messages to students on social media.

Karimganj deputy commissioner Pradip Ranjan Talukdar today ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident. He also asked the chairman of the governing body of the college and former principal of the college, Nibaran Das, to submit a report of the incident within two days.

Expressing concern over the principal’s activities, Das said he had already informed the director of higher education, who had sought a report, about the incident. The director has suggested that the matter be examined with three more members of the governing body.

Das said if the principal was found guilty, the college authorities would take action against him. He said there were a series of allegations against the principal and the matter of sending messages to students had been raised in a governing body meeting three months back but the principal had turned it down saying it was a conspiracy of a section of students. He alleged that the relation between the principal and teachers of the college was not congenial.

The principal’s wife, Saradamoni Das, is also a teacher in the college. Nibaran Das alleged that the principal’s son interferes in college matters, which is resented by the students. During the last foundation day of the college, the students had protested against his interference in selection of dances and other cultural programmes.

Students of Rabindra Sadan Girls’ College, Karimganj College as well as other educational institutions, led by Subharaj Das, president of the Karimganj unit of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Pari-shad, took out a procession today, laid siege to the offices of the deputy commissioner and superintendent of police and submitted a memorandum, with printouts of messages sent by Das to students appended to it, demanding action against the principal.

Students alleged that the principal had rejected the nomination papers of some ABVP candidates for the college council election, scheduled for September 12. When they went to the principal’s chamber yesterday to enquire about the reason of rejection, he pushed them. They also alleged that those who don’t obey the principal’s orders face action and that they were being threatened by a group to unconditionally withdraw the allegations.
