NRC worry in Barak Valley

The news meet in Karimganj on Wednesday

Hailakandi: Several organisations have expressed concern over the large number of names yet to be published from Barak Valley and the huge quantum of errors in the published list of draft NRC.

The groups will organise a public meeting, led by Barak Upatyaka Banga Sahitya O Sanskriti Sanmilan, in Silchar town on Friday evening. The district Congress committee and the Union Territory Demand Committee will take out rallies in Silchar on January 8 and 16 respectively.

This was decided in a meeting in Silchar on Tuesday. It was attended by members of the Sanmilan, Citizen’s Right Protection Committee, Union Territory Demand Committee, All Cachar Karimganj Hailakandi Students’ Association, former vice-chancellor of Assam University Tapadhir Bhattacharjee and former MLA Ataur Rahman Majharbhuiya, among others.

The meeting said the names of 30-50 per cent people from the valley’s three districts have been included in the first list and these too are full of errors. In Hailakandi, 2,17,571 names, out of 7,19,840, appeared in the first list (30 per cent). In Karimganj, 5,07,840 names, out of 13,24,096, are on the list (38.35 per cent). In Cachar, 6,42,679 names, out of 18,23,302, featured on the list (35.25 per cent).

Sanmilan president Saurindra Bhattacharjee demanded an error-free NRC, failing which he warned of a vigorous protest. He said they would submit a memorandum to governor Jagdish Mukhi, chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal and NRC state co-ordinator Prateek Hajela through the deputy commissioner of Cachar on Friday. A delegation will also meet Hajela in Guwahati. Cachar deputy commissioner S. Lakshmanan said verification for the second list was on.

Silchar MP Sushmita Dev demanded inclusion of genuine Indians’ names at the earliest. Congress MLAs from Karimganj, Kamalakshya Dey Purkayastha and Jamal Uddin, also demanded early inclusion of the names.
