DTO reins in unruly city buses, suspends licences

GUWAHATI, Sept 16 – In a bid to rein in unruly city buses in Guwahati, the District Transport Officer (DTO) has launched a special drive, penalising errant drivers and even suspending their permits and licences.On Friday, a joint checking by the enforcement wings, Kamrup (Metro) and Kamrup, and the police was conducted at Kamalpur. A total of 21 cases were registered against offences relating to violation of noise pollution norms. Ten cases were registered for driving dangerously and two cases registered against overloading of passengers. Heavy fines were also imposed on several buses.

Earlier, the enforcement inspectors suspended the permits of eleven share taxis and eight city buses.

“The special drive has begun about fifteen days back and it will continue for a few more days. We will be able to catch more such errant drivers in the next few days,” DTO Prasenjit Ghosh said.

Fines up to Rs 5,000 were imposed on some vehicles.

While the passenger intake capacity of city buses is around 30, the enforcement inspectors have caught city buses carrying more than 45 people. Most of the buses were caught in the Ganeshguri, Christian Basti and Chandmari areas.
